"HE IS RISEN"
On May 9th, Act’s 1: We Celebrate Jesus Accession into Heaven
As Luke continues his story of the early church in the Book of Acts he reminds the reader, Theophilus (No one knows who Theophilus was. Some think he was a Roman magistrate. In Greek Theophilus means loved by God or friend of God. Some feel this a generic title applying the Jesus followers in general.) that Luke had been telling about Jesus who inspired the Jesus following movement. In Acts Luke goes on to tell how the Jesus following movement changed, adapted top situations and grew.
In Act 1:4 Jesus tells the disciple to not leave Jerusalem but they are to wait for the gift the Father is going to send them. Jesus reminds them that John (the Baptist) baptized with water, the Father would baptize them with the Holy Spirit.
According to Luke Jesus spent 40 days (referencing back to Jesus’ time in the desert or Moses’ in 40 years in the Saini) with the disciples following his resurrection. During the time he was with them, he continued to teach and guide, helping them to prepare for the ministry which was to build the Body of Christ (the church) on earth.
On the 40th day Jesus and disciples gathered on the Mount of Olives. The disciples gathered around him asking if now was the time when he would restore the Kingdom. Jesus replied that it was not for them to know the times or the date, but they would receive the Holy Spirit and with its power they would be Jesus’ witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.
As he said this he started to rise into the sky. The disciples watched until he disappeared among the clouds. Suddenly two men dressed in white stood in their midst’s asking “Men of Galilee,” they asked, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?” They told the disciples they had been given your direction…now go to work.
