Decorating the Tree, Hanging the Greens, Communion and the finished Tree

First Sunday of Advent

Hanging of the Greens

Along with being the first Sunday of the Liturgical Year 2025, it is also the first Sunday in Advent.  Advent is the four weeks leading up to Christmas.  It is a time of preparation when we prepare ourselves to receive that gift that God sent to humanity over 2,000 years ago, the gift of His Son, which lead to our salvation, the sacrifice for our sins.

Advent Wreath can be traced back to the early Lutheran Church In the evergreen wreath there are five candles.  Four candles are set across from each other on the wreath edge, and one candle is set in the center.  Each Sunday of Advent an additional candle is lit, until on Christmas Eve the center candle is lit.  The candles represent Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

As a time of preparation the purpose of candles is to remind us of the season, but also to reflect on the deeper message associated with the candle.

This week we light the Candle of Hope.  Sometimes known as the “Prophets Candle” this candle reminds us of the Hope which Jesus brings into the world.  Reaching back into the Old Testament Hope reminds us of the promises of the Messiah which would come fulfilling the prophecies.  Today we live in a world of confusion, uncertainty, challenges and constant change.  It good to remember the Hope we hold in Sovereign God.
